Collective regionalism

ABOUT: Issue 1 is titled ‘The Collective’ and brings together contributions from over a hundred key figures in the field – including members of the editorial board, advisors, and design studios – in a narrative that combines theoretical essays, case studies, visual storytelling, and data. The volume (with a playfully surreal cover by Olga Prader) is divided into four sections: Elements, dedicated to fundamental architectural components; Essays, featuring pieces by the Editorial Board; Projects, which analyzes projects at various scales through critical texts, photographs, and original drawings; and finally Companies, which explores innovations in design and architecture businesses.

Among the texts is an essay on studioser‘s quietly radical project in the hamlet of Monte, Ticino. The feature introduces the term ‘collective regionalism’ and explores how the project reactivates the village’s spatial and social fabric through a series of modest yet highly contextual interventions. Based on oral histories and close engagement with the community, the essay highlights how the architects co-produced spaces that respond to local memory, material practices, and intergenerational use. Eschewing grand gestures, Monte is presented as an architecture of repair – one that reinforces existing narratives, prioritizes subtle transformation, and demonstrates how careful, participatory design can restore continuity in place-making.
