A Theater Like This Has Never Been Built (coming 10/2025)

An Exhibition on the Architecture and History of Theater Basel

Date: October 3–26, during Foyer Public opening hours
Location: Theaterplatz / Foyer Public / Alte Billettkasse
Artistic Director: Angela Osthoff (Theater Basel)
Curator: Andreas Kofler

Most architecture exhibitions must rely on proxies: drawings, photographs, models… But what happens when an exhibition takes place in the building itself? For its 50th anniversary, Theater Basel becomes its own 1:1 model and therewith the site, the subject, and the display. Its history is anything but linear: like the curve of its roof, it moves in tensions and arcs rather than straight progressions. Instead of models or drawings, the exhibition unfolds in and around the building itself. Twenty panels reveal that A Theater Like This Has Never Been Built – a rare exhibition where architecture stars as its original.

Accompanying program: The exhibition is complemented by themed guided tours led by experts from architecture, art, and technology – both from within and outside the Theater Basel.
